Funding, Contests and Grant Opportunities
  1. The Ontario Active School Travel Fund is an initiative of Ontario Active School Travel, a three-year program that is piloting a provincial framework for increasing active transportation for the journey to school. The ultimate goal of the program, and its partners, is to achieve population-level change to reverse the decline in active school travel in Ontario, and to establish a culture of walking and wheeling to school. The program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education and delivered by Green Communities Canada. The deadline for applications for the Ontario Active School Travel Fund is 5pm EST on 21 December 2018. The Fund offers grants of up to $60,000 per community for partnership-based projects that expand active school travel and build a foundation for lasting impact. Read the Program Guide, Q&A's, and request the Ontario Active School Travel Fund application package here.
  2. The Solar Oven Challenge is an annual contest with delectable results. Students from classes across Canada (Grades 4-12) are invited to use the construction plans at Re-Energy.ca to build working models of a solar oven. The classes then compete for a chance to win a grand prize of $500 or one of two runner prizes of $250 each. Deadline: Spring each year.
  3. Staples Superpower Your School Contest. If your school runs an environmental project or program that is saving the planet, then this contest is for you. In the Staples Superpower Your School contest, schools are invited to submit their eco initiatives for a chance to win up to $20,000 worth of technology for their school. Deadline: January 31, 2019.
  4. The Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Presented by Shell and Canadian Geographic, the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge (CEDC) is a competition that aids energy awareness by encouraging Canadian classrooms (K-12) to compete in energy-themed activities. They will be competing for more than 90 prizes worth a total of $40,000. Deadline:Classrooms should be registered by January 27, 2019.
  5. Government of Canada: Climate Action Fund Climate change is a complex environmental challenge our youth will have to face in their time. Therefore, the Climate Action Fund (CAF) provides variable amounts of funding to support Canadian students and youth (ages 15 – 30 years) in climate change education.
