She worked in the arts and entertainment industry prior to her work in the non-profit world. On learning of her acclamation, she stated: “I am honoured to be the Green MP Candidate for Scarborough Southwest, born and raised here, and ready to proudly represent our riding. Toronto faces great challenges as we struggle to improve on Health Care delivery and conditions in Long-Term-Care facilities for our seniors, provide Affordable Housing, maintain a Livable Income for our residents, modernize City Infrastructure, expand Public Transit and adapt to a changing Job market. We must focus on solutions that are sustainable, while delivering positive results within the next four years. You have my commitment to fight for the needs of our community.” An active community advocate, Amanda has been addressing issues of education and training, economic development and civic engagement in Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIAs) of Toronto for the past 22 years. As a mother, she believes in building strong communities that support our most vulnerable citizens, and has focused much of her attention to building policy on poverty reduction. Amanda's activism started early on, while a still a student at R.H. King Academy, where her recognition of social and racial inequity led her to found the United Cultures of King, thereby launching her vocation in advocacy. She has been honoured with an Ontario Volunteer Service Award and a Toronto Dollar Award for her to social change and advocacy. Most recently, she was selected to contribute to policy recommendations for the Ontario Campaign 2000 for Poverty Reduction. The issue of food security will be top of mind for Amanda here in Scarborough Southwest which has one of the highest levels of childhood poverty in the city. As your next MP for Scarborough Southwest, Amanda will also champion:
On the subject of Climate Change, Amanda stated: “The Green Party of Canada's commitment to solving our climate crisis with its ‘Mission Possible’ action plan solidified my resolve to run for the Party. The latest IPCC report makes it clear that we need to have implemented solutions in place to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius within this decade. The Green Party of Canada is the only federal party that will have a detailed fiscally responsible plan to meet these international commitments. Determined political action needs to be taken now or we face a climate catastrophe.” Mission: Possible Climate Action Plan https://www.green-ssw.ca/a-bold-new-mission-possible.../ For more information contact: Eric Stark, Scarborough Southwest EDA [email protected] -30- Thursday, 21 November 2019 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (EST)
Ontario Active School Travel and 8 80 Cities present a webinar on School Streets, a successful program from the U.K. that has been proven to improve safety, reduce air pollution, and encourage more active transportation. School Streets are appearing in cities across the UK and Europe, where communities take part in creating car-free zones in front of schools at peak drop-off and pick-up times. Hackney Borough Council is a municipality that has pioneered the installation of School Street zones in the City of London, U.K. with 4 permanent zones established to date, and 3 more pilots underway in 2019. Building on the lessons learnt in Hackney, 8 80 Cities teamed up with Keele Street Public School, Toronto District School Board and EcoKids to host the first School Streets pilot project in Canada this October. Learn about how to plan and implement a School Street This webinar will discuss the motivations behind the School Streets movement, and identify what makes a good candidate for a successful School Street pilot. Our presenters will share their experiences of planning and implementing School Streets and highlight resources available to support these initiatives:

October 4, 2019 SIDNEY, B.C. — Today the Liberals went far beyond the normal reach of a writ period “caretaker government”, when they challenged the recent landmark ruling by the Candian Human Rights Tribunal to compensate First Nations children who were damaged by the on-reserve child welfare system. “How was this decision reached?” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “I call on Justin Trudeau to explain how it is that the legal challenge has been launched. Trudeau must explain and reverse this outrage. The Indigenous Peoples have suffered, and continue to suffer human rights abuses. So when we are finally called upon to rectify one small portion of these harms, they pull this? We’re so ready to criticize other countries on their human rights abuses, yet we cannot even honor and care for First Nations peoples in Canada.” Ms. May pointed out that the Green Party budget includes $2 billion to honour the ruling of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in the matter of unequal treatment of Indigenous children. Green Party Indigenous Affairs critic Lorraine Rekmans observed that Canada is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) yet fails the most vulnerable population in Canada, First Nations children. “The Liberal government has fought the Human Rights Tribunal on this issue for years,” said Ms. Rekmans. “There is no logic in their resistance to continue this racialized discrimination. There is no reason, political or otherwise to continue to punish children who are living in poverty. The simple fact is that the Liberal government is refusing to uphold human rights for children in Canada. Greens will stand up for these children who have been pushed to the margins where this government continues to hold them. Greens will uphold human rights in Canada.” Ms. May concluded that Canada has a profound legal obligation to reconcile and provide restitution for the colonial relations – marked by violent expropriation, displacement, and forced assimilation – that have undermined the cultural, governance and economic foundations of the Indigenous Peoples of this land. “I call on Justin Trudeau to explain this outrage.” --- 4 octobre 2019 SIDNEY (C.-B.) » a demandé Elizabeth May, chef du Parti vert.
October 3, 2019 SIDNEY, B.C. — According to Statistics Canada, the number of seniors will soon exceed the number of children aged 14 and younger for the first time ever. By 2036, Canada’s seniors population could be close to 11 million. “It is our duty to care for seniors,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “It’s unconscionable that so many seniors are living below the poverty line, many having to make heartbreaking choices between food, medicine or rent. A Green government will bring in a Guaranteed Livable Income. We’ll ensure that universal Pharmacare, better public transportation, home retrofits and affordable housing are priorities. These initiatives will help to enhance the quality of life for Canadian seniors.” The Green Party Platform will also ensure that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) remains robust and adaptive to changing needs and circumstances by increasing over time the target income replacement rate from 25 per cent to 50 per cent of income received during working years. Greens will also protect private pensions by amending the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act to establish the preeminence of pensioners and the pension plan in the creditor hierarchy during company insolvency proceedings. Ms. May noted that within 25 years, the number of Canadians living with a form of dementia could reach 1.3 million, imposing the highest economic, social, and health costs of all diseases. “We have to be proactive with regard to diseases like dementia and Alzheimers. Greens will develop and fund a national dementia strategy. This will support research and improve the quality of life not just for patients, but for caregivers as well. We need to educate the public and increase awareness about this disease so we can reduce the stigma currently surrounding it.” A Green government will amend the Medical Assistance in Dying legislation to ensure that everyone has the option to die with dignity. This includes allowing advance directives and guaranteeing the right to draw up a “living will” that gives individuals the power to limit or refuse medical intervention and treatment. “An essential outcome of the social contract between government and citizens is to make sure people can live fulfilling and dignified lives in their senior years. Greens will make sure that this happens,” concluded Ms. May. --- 3 Octobre , 2019 SIDNEY (C.-B.)
October 2, 2019 OTTAWA — The Green Party’s Mission: Possible climate action plan calls for big changes in the way Canadians work and travel, as the national economy shifts rapidly from fossil fuels to renewable energy to meet the goal of zero emissions by 2050. Cars, buses and trains will be powered by electricity and internal combustion engines will be banned by 2030. However, while researchers focus on developing better storage devices and new and more robust electric motors, some heavy-duty industrial machinery – fishing, mining and forestry equipment, for example – will need to rely on biofuels. The Green Party supports the creation of biofuels using waste plant matter from forests and agriculture — but not from food that could otherwise feed Canadians. A Green government will promote the development of local, small scale bio-diesel production, primarily relying on used vegetable fat from restaurants across Canada with wood and agricultural waste. Fuel switching to bio-diesel will be required for agricultural, fishing and forestry equipment. “Food should power people, not vehicles,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “Too many families face difficulty putting food on the table. Producing biofuels from waste is efficient and relatively clean, but producing them from crops that could feed Canadians is immoral.” Between 2015-16, at least one in six children lived in a home that struggled to provide food. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the cleanest ethanol made from plants can produce 90 per cent global fewer warming emissions than gasoline. Around 40 per cent of the corn grown in the United States goes towards creating ethanol for fuel. While biofuels can help shift Canada to green energy, feeding Canadians is the priority, May said. “The Green Party always puts people first. To create and operate new, renewable industries, we will rely on some heavy equipment that, for the moment, relies on liquid fuel and combustion. We can use biofuel as a less environmentally harmful alternative, but we cannot grow crops for fuel while Canadians go hungry.” » VANCOUVER – From September 20 to 27, more than a million Canadians joined the global Climate Strike, inspired by teenage activist Greta Thunberg to demand real action on the climate emergency. Climate change is not just another ballot box issue any more and the old-line parties are finally taking notice.
“The October 21 federal election is now a referendum on the climate emergency,” said Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “Canadians are looking for the party that tells them the truth about what we need to do to avoid climate catastrophe. That party is the Green Party.” Ms. May said that overwhelming public support for the Climate Strike had prompted a quick response from the other parties. “They are scrambling to catch up but none of them has a plan that gets us where we need to be to preserve a livable biosphere.” The Green Party’s Mission: Possible climate action plan is in sync with the demands of the climate strikers, its emissions targets are in line with recommendations of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and it is the only plan built on an unwavering commitment to eliminating fossil fuels, including LNG and fracked gas pipelines. “It’s encouraging to see the other party leaders finally taking notice,” said Ms. May, “but one of them ignores climate science completely, one bought a pipeline and a third supports the LNG Canada megaproject, climate destroying fracked gas infrastructure on a massive scale,” said Ms. May. “Are the Trudeau and Singh climate proposals better than Scheer’s – of course, but they’re still not nearly ambitious enough.” Mission: Possible analysis shows a pathway to the Paris emissions target. The Green Party’s shadow cabinet climate caucus today released the party's background research supporting Mission: Possible released last May, showing how Canada can achieve a 60 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. “It is detailed and complex, but this technical work with references to other external sources supports the ambition of Mission:Possible,” said climate caucus member and party finance critic John Kidder (candidate for Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon). “It is the homework our youth wants to read."
“Our analysis shows that the measures we are proposing are not only possible, they actually create the pathway to a more just, stable and prosperous nation,” said Ms. May. “The Green Party knows this, the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who marched know this, the only ones who still don’t get it are the other parties, who continue to argue about what’s politically possible rather than doing what’s environmentally essential.” The Mission: Possible analysis is available at: https://www.greenparty.ca/en/mission-possible-analysis.pdf # # # For more information or to arrange an interview contact: Rosie Emery Press Secretary 613-562-4916x206 [email protected] September 16, 2019
TORONTO — Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May launched the party’s 2019 election platform today – a bold vision for a just, prosperous and sustainable Canada arrived at through Honest, Ethical, Caring, Leadership. The platform, which is being fully costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office, is not a conventional set of political promises. It presents a vision for Canada in 2030 firmly based on strong, progressive social and ecological policies that will make Canada a climate leader and drive the transition to the green innovation economy of the 21st century. “We are in a climate emergency and politics-as-usual is leading us down a path we simply cannot survive,” said Ms. May. “The Green Party is proposing a course change, and we are ready to take the lead.” On the climate emergency, Ms. May said: The Green Party’s climate action plan -- Mission: Possible recognises that our house is on fire. There’s no time left for incremental actions. We must act decisively and we must act now if we are to keep the global average temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees C. If we fail, we risk losing our hospitable biosphere making millions of species extinct, including our own. “We must transition off fossil fuels and it must be a just and fair economic and social transition that ensures a safe and prosperous future for all Canadians.” The climate crisis is the lens through which every policy envelope in the platform is viewed – the economy, health, education, foreign affairs, immigration, public safety, defence, social welfare, transportation. The policy framework is also designed to meet the linked challenges of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, climate stability, economic and social justice, and real democracy. It is grounded in science and expert analysis. Ms. May stressed that First Nations, Métis and Inuit must be fully engaged in Canada’s decision-making. “A Green government will support all Indigenous Peoples’ efforts to emerge from the positions of disadvantage in which Canada has placed them. We believe that Canada cannot reach its full potential as a nation until true justice and reconciliation has been achieved." A Green government will re-introduce legislation to enshrine the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in Canadian law and implement the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Greens will uphold and fulfill Canada’s responsibilities in all agreements with Indigenous Peoples. Greens will guarantee universal pharmacare, dental coverage for low income Canadians, elimination of tuition and billions for post-secondary education, and the elimination of poverty through a Guaranteed Liveable income. Policies will address housing affordability, good governance, international relations and defence, immigration, arts, culture and media, fisheries policy, endangered species, water quality, ocean plastics, seniors, women’s health and food security. “The decisions to be made by the next government of Canada will shape our future as a nation,” said Ms. May.“Will we hunker down to defend the status quo, leaving Canada behind as the world moves on? Or will we embrace the dual challenge of responding to the climate emergency and strengthening the social contract with all citizens? It’s time for real leadership.” » New energy efficiency rebate for residents
The Government of Canada recently announced the launch of the Energy Savings Rebate program to help make climate action affordable for Ontarians. A total of $200 million of support over two years will be provided to Ontario retailers to offer up to 25% off the purchase price of specific energy-saving products. Eligible products include electric-vehicle chargers, tankless water heaters, ENERGY STAR certified appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers and more. For a full list of eligible products, visit the Energy Savings program website or those of major retailers. https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/climate-change/low-carbon-economy-fund/energy-savings-rebate.html New energy efficiency rebate for business owners In July, the federal government announced a new Climate Action Incentive Fund rebate for small- and medium-sized businesses to implement retrofit projects. The rebate is up to 25 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $250,000 for businesses with under 500 employees. Eligible projects include building retrofits, renewable energy installations, industrial process improvements and more. It’s time our cities, towns and transportation systems entered the 21st century. Canada’s city planning is outdated. Eighty-two percent of Canadians live in urban centres, yet our roads, public transit systems, sprawling suburbs and disproportionately small municipal budgets are relics of a time when most of us lived in rural areas. Poor planning means gridlock, longer commute times, mismanaged bike lanes, overcrowded buses, smoggy skylines and unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions from private cars. Build better, cleaner cities. Greens want smart city infrastructure designed for people, not cars. Our green growth plan includes upgraded municipal transportation budgets so that cities can generate jobs and afford efficient light rail transit, coordinated buses, bike lanes and pedestrian pathways.
Canadians should love where they live. We want cities and towns connected by modern railways and public transportation, places where Canadian workers and families can move freely and easily experience all their regions have to offer. That’s why Green MPs will:
